Resurfacing Shark Obsession

Some of you may know that when I was a kid and even well into my adult years I was fascinated by sharks. I would collect National Geographics featuring sharks, I participated in debates about why sharks are amazing creatures (4th and 5th grade), and I loved watching movies and specials about them.

The funny thing is I was terrified of them. That was part of the appeal. I think because I viewed them as untouchable, in another world from mine, knowing if I swam with them (as was a fantasy of mine) I would be extremely vulnerable and it would probably end badly, ultimately this drew me to them and made me respect and admire them. So blah blah blah. I love sharks.

My sister Maddy has the same fear and fascination so when we went to Hawaii recently it took a lot to get the both of us to stop freaking out about the recent shark attack and just enjoy the water. So in honor of that fear, this link is for you, Maddy. I stumbled upon it and was pulled in for a good half hour figuring out where I’m probably not going to swim.

Recent Shark Attacks

So here’s to Sharks and my uncomfortable strange obsession with them.

Then there’s your album “shark sandwich…” It’s just a two-word review: shit sandwich.. golly, I love This is Spinal Tap… 🙂

But I dig your little obsession.. anything that never sleeps and has a skeleton entirely composed of cartilage is pretty freakin cool in my book..

I especially like the section where they compare the risk of shark attacks to other types of injuries. In the “Annual Animal Bites” section, I learned the rather startling fact that in 1987, 95 people in New York City were bitten by squirrels. How cool is THAT???

Good to know, especially since I will be heading to the ocean for two different occasions this summer, and I plan on getting into the ocean to swim. I love the ocean too much to stay out. But now I know when and where it is more dangerous…thanks, KT!

Well, first off here’s to sharks – the San Jose Sharks for their fine performance on the ice this post season. Second, little known fact. There used to be a picture of my dad in Steinheart Aquarium in SF because in like 82 or 83 a sufer was attacked off of Asilomar and his board, with a huge shark bite taken out of it, washed up on the beach. My dad was the Ranger it who found it.

Yeah. Sharks ruin my kayaking trips. I would have a lot more fun paddling out on the open ocean if I wasn’t so DAMN terrified!

yeah, so what do you think of the movie “JAWS”?I’ve seen it well over 100 times and still love it.

  9. Cleaning Out The Card Catalog Of The Mind

As I was walking home last night, I noticed a parking attendant writing a ticket for a car with an expired meter. It was 5:57 pm; the city of Portsmouth stops issuing parking tickets at 6pm. My first instinct was…
