Reading your letter and your blog brings back a rush of memories.
When we got to Prague (while I was going to school in Florence) we had the same experience. We chose to go with a blond, hippy guy named “Titto.” We had no idea how far away his place was. He ended up sleeping in the kitchen under his table and gave up his room to us. It was amazing. Prague was like a story book with the buildings, glassware, and people. It was also the cheapest place we visited. Lots of great food if I recall correctly.
Now you are heading to Salzburg which was my favorite place. We went in the dead of winter. Stayed at a wonderful hostel, sat up and watched the Sound of Music and then also went on the tour. A bit cheesy but had to do it. The best part was going up to the fortress on the top of the hill and then coming down to the bottom…totally freezing…and finding a wonderful old cafe/bar that had the town’s famous Garlic cream soup with croutons. You have to find this. I can’t remember the name of the soup…but it still haunts me…it was so good.
